ebm‑papst, a global leader in fans and motors, is advancing the expansion of its Xi’an plant, a milestone project designed to enhance local capabilities and champion sustainability. The 27,000-square-meter expansion, with a 30 million EUR investment, is scheduled for completion by mid-2025. Once finished, it will increase the total area of the Xi’an plant to 60,000 square meters, reinforcing the company’s “local for local” strategy and its strong commitment to the Chinese market.
The expanded Xi’an plant will feature new office spaces, an R&D lab, a tool shop, production workshops, warehouses, and logistics infrastructure, incorporating advanced technologies from the company’s German headquarters to meet rising demand. Structural work on the key facilities is complete, with electromechanical installations and interior decoration underway.
Meanwhile, the expanded plant will focus on key business areas such as data centers and clean rooms, delivering specialized energy-efficient solutions tailored to these critical industries. Once the expansion reaches full capacity, it will create over 500 new job opportunities, driving economic growth and strengthening the local workforce.

Sustainability is at the heart of the project. The facility includes energy-efficient glazing, thermal insulation, a fully LED lighting system, and a geothermal heat pump for air conditioning. Its “sponge city” design enables rainwater harvesting and water conservation. ebm‑papst’s energy-efficient fans are also integrated into its air handling and exhaust systems, setting new standards for green industrial operations.
Recognized as a key construction project by the Xi’an municipal government, the expansion has been highlighted for its contributions to local economic growth. At the groundbreaking ceremony on April 30, 2024, Xi’an Mayor Niuping Ye and Vice Mayor Hao Meng, along with representatives from the company, including Thomas Nürnberger, Chief Sales Officer of the ebm‑papst Group and CEO of Air Technology for the APAC & MEA region, attended the event.
“We encourage ebm‑papst to leverage its leadership in innovation and market development to drive industrial growth, expand its product portfolio, and foster greater synergy in the local manufacturing ecosystem,” said Niuping Ye.
Thomas Nürnberger stated, “The Xi’an expansion reflects our strong belief in the potential of the Chinese market and our dedication to sustainable innovation. By blending advanced technologies with local expertise, we are driving growth that benefits our customers, communities, and the environment.”
The Xi’an plant expansion is a cornerstone of ebm‑papst’s strategy to make sustainable and intelligent solutions for a better climate. As the project progresses, it will bolster the company’s ability to support customers with the energy-efficient products to contribute to global carbon reduction efforts.
